What exactly is Intuitive Eating?
Intuitive Eating is a practice that can help you re-learn how to tap into your own body’s wisdom. Once you realize when you are hungry and when you are satisfied and the reasons you overeat (stress, boredom, dieting, etc.), you will be well on your way to a healthier you. Don’t worry, everyone, even YOU has an internal hunger/ satiety meter. I can help you tune into yours!
I don’t have any willpower, if I let myself eat chocolate, I won’t be able to stop. Shouldn’t you just tell me what to eat?
I am a dietitian, of course I could just tell you what to eat, but I have a feeling you already know what you are supposed to be eating. If I told you what to eat, that would be a diet and diets are easy for me to hand out and for you to start, but difficult to maintain, that’s why so many diets fail. IE is different, it teaches you to think about food differently and allows for lasting results. Intuitive Eating is not about depriving yourself, so “no willpower” is not an issue.
I am concerned about my child, I know she is overweight, but I don’t know how to help. She always gets so defensive whenever I bring up the topic of food. How can you help?
This is very common, often the more a parent tries to help, the worse the problem gets. Dealing with an overweight child is tricky, you don’t want to do more harm than good. Depending on the age of your child, I can either work with them alone (usually much to the teens’ relief) or I can work with just the parents and not involve the child at all. If your child is younger and you are the one in charge of shopping and cooking I can help you develop a plan that will work for the whole family so your one child does not feel like a black sheep. I teach you how to work with your child.
I eat emotionally and tend to overeat at night, how will intuitive eating help me?
This is extremely common, especially for women. IE is wonderful for emotional eaters, just like you. By learning to eat intuitively you will begin to tune in and trust your body. By putting the power into your hands, you will learn to become your own nutrition expert. By properly fueling your body during the day, you will be less likely to overeat in the evening.
My 2 year old is the pickiest eater I have ever seen, can you help?
Yes! I would love to help you to help your selective eater to try different foods and make meal times a lot less stressful for the whole family.
Can anyone use Intuitive Eating, what if some family members have diabetes or high cholesterol?
Eating intuitively is a safe and healthy way for everyone to eat.
As always, if you have a serious health concern, you should speak with your physician.
